Sports Ambassadors/Role Models

A deliberate and consistent effort must be made to identify, recognize and utilize the services of peers and role models, past and present. Most of these sought after would-be athletes’ years - pre-16 yrs old are impressionable years for these youngsters, and the positive impact of carefully chosen role models for them can be tremendous. In addition, some value qualitatively, would be added to the lives of these retired athletes, some of who have been relegated to oblivion.

It is suggested that:-

  • A Sport Ambassador or two (male and female) be appointed for each sport, to assist in training, monitoring and counseling of these youngsters
  • Overall Sports Ambassadors (male and female) be appointed for the State- recommended by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to HE on Grassroots Sports Development in consultations with the Sports Associations.
  • Branding of Schools training fields, pitches and halls in retired athletes’ names e.g. Hakeem Olajuwon  Hall, Demola Ali T/tennis Section, A. K. Amu Tracks, Maiyegun Boxing Arena etc.
